We are nearing the end of a tumultuous year. Even the most chill-axed of us is being affected by the current surge in the pandemic as thoughts of relaxing holiday traditions are once again flummoxed. How on earth can we remain calm, cool and collected when there is so much uncertainty swirling about?
When the world around is is chaotic, the secret of self-care is to turn inward and buffer up resources that we actually control.
Meditation - Starting or continuing a practice of meditation reprograms your central nervous system and widens your window of tolerance. Meditation allows us to actually practice letting go of thoughts rather than ruminating on them. By bringing focus to the present moment, you can experience peace.
Breath - Practicing breathing techniques is another way to calm down and induce the relaxation response. By simply allowing the out-breath to be slightly longer than the in-breath, we signal our bodies that all is well and there is no imminent danger to contend with.
Creative activity - No matter what we are feeling inside, it is healthy to express it outwardly. One way to do this is to turn to creative activity…making something with your hands, composing music or prose, moving your body, drumming or humming to a rhythm are all effective ways to self-soothe. By focusing on the process rather than the product, you are giving yourself a way to externalize whatever thoughts may be bothering you. In this way, you can lessen the burden of what you are emotionally carrying.
Spiritual pursuits - Whether you are moved by a symphony orchestra, a poem, a religious service, a walk in nature or lighting a candle, find those practices that give you a sense of meaning beyond the everyday activities of life. Pondering the great questions and feeling a part of something larger than yourself can bring a sense of solace during stressful moments.
Physical care - Getting enough sleep, hydration, nutrition and taking care of any health issues that are preventing you from enjoying your life are an essential part of self-care. Each of us has a responsibility to find what works for us either from conventional medicine, natural or homeopathic remedies, movement and work-life balance. Our bodies need to move!
Revisiting - We are not the same person as we were one year ago; we continue to grow and change over time. Routines that may have worked in the past, may need updating or tweaking in order to meet our needs today. The end of the year is the perfect time to take a look at what you are doing to keep yourself healthy and well, and to make changes accordingly. You are the best source of information on what you need to stay in optimal shape. And optimal self-care can make the difference between coasting through this next phase of life or succumbing to the stress and uncertainty in the world around us.
Wishing you health and well-being.
