Well, well….here we are, spending time at home.

When life seems out of control, it is empowering to focus on those things that we can control. Like, what time will you wake up in the morning and what will you accomplish today?

As unique individuals, each of us must decide what works best for us. At the same time, there are some things that help all of us.

1) Try to have a regular sleep routine. Each of us requires a different optimum amount of sleep. Most of us need between 7-9 hours of sleep. Choose a bedtime and wake up time that gives you your ideal number of hours of sleep. You can also set your phone to “bedtime” which will silence calls and notifications during the times you want to sleep.

2) Drink a glass of water upon waking up. Studies show that it is important to get enough water throughout your day. Starting the day with a glass of water is a good habit, although anytime you drink water is good for your body.

3) Think of what you want to accomplish today. Setting small goals that are reasonable will give you a sense of accomplishment. Don’t overdo it. Start small.

4) Plan to eat something nourishing for your body. Include some fresh fruit, vegetables and more water.

5) Have some social interaction. In these times of social isolation, utilize those things that are available to you…learn how to use Facetime or Skype or Zoom and have a conversation with a friend, colleague, neighbor, family member. Setting up a certain time for an online chat can be a great way to stay connected to the people who are important to you.

6) Move your body. You can’t go to the gym at the moment, but you can turn on some music and dance. You can stretch your arms above your head. You can do some yoga. You can exercise to a video or online class.

7) Create something. Inspire yourself. Perhaps you can try a new recipe. Bake bread. Draw. Paint. Write a poem. Pick up an instrument and play. Invent a new dance move. Use your voice. Sing.

8) Use your mind actively. Read a book or article. Do a puzzle. Learn something new. Practice a skill you haven’t had the chance to use recently.

9) Practice gratitude. Remind yourself of three things you feel grateful for. Count your blessings.

10) Get dressed. Make your bed. Take a shower. Live your best day. Staying safe and making sure those around you are safe is good not only for you but for everyone.

11) Oh…and don’t forget to wash your hands and stay 6 feet away from anyone outside your home.
